Lease-purchase programs for Truck Drivers & Owner Operators
John Thompson is a happy man these days. He's about go out on the
open road with his wife as a team. They're going to be traveling
in style with his new Mack tractor.
Thompson used to drive mostly in the north and south
east hauling paper products to Jersey from all points throughout
the U.S. But a lease-purchase program he found on Truckergeek.com
has changed his life. Lease-purchase arrangements for some truck
drivers and owner operators have a bad reputation in the trucking
industry. Many companies offer them as a way for drivers who want
to become independent and to get a new truck at a low cost. Of course
trucking companies benefit from it in as it takes away from them
a lot of the typical burdens such as liability and insurance issues.
Some say that while the lease-purchase concept has financial advantages
in some case's it has it down side as well, according to the Owner
Operator the Independent Drivers Assn. OOIDA web site: “Buying
through a lease purchase program is the way to go if you don't have
the money or credit to purchase a tractor outright. But the drawback
is that you're locked into what the company wants you to do.”
Under most typical lease-purchase plan, a driver agrees to set aside
funds to cover the cost of insurance, taxes and other items over
the term of the lease, usually 4-6 years. At the end of the lease,
the driver can buy the truck or renew the lease.
Drivers need to know when they are looking at a lease
purchase program what the pro's and con's are. Do your homework and
count the cost. If you’re
not willing to run the miles rethink your move. Lease purchase is
for serious milers and you better love the open road. As for me and
my house 'Condo' we are heading down life’s highway making
money and living large.
